The global liquefied natural gas (LNG) market is one of the fastest growing markets in the oil and gas sector, with new terminals and tankers continuously being built to meet rising demand. During the loading, transportation, and unloading of vessels carrying LNG, LNG boils off at ambient conditions. As a result, the gas constantly must be re-compressed back to its liquid form. A variety of compressors of different sizes are present on LNG tankers, and electric motors are utilized as prime movers.
Utilizing smaller size compressor systems for shipboard applications is very beneficial. Not only does it provide more cargo room, but it also lessens the significant cost of constructing the special compressor rooms due to the danger of explosion from natural gas vapors. The same benefits also apply to land-based loading and unloading terminals, for which the same compressors can be used. As a part of the compressor system for either of these applications, DDS’s high-speed PM motor provides a significant advantage by delivering high performance while taking up very little space.
