Keeping It Liquid is a Full time Job

By its nature, Liquefied Natural Gas boils off under ambient conditions, meaning that during transit it must be constantly compressed back into its liquid form. This requires a variety of compressors to be online, some working constantly, some utilized only during loading and unloading. Keeping the size of these compressors as small as possible is important especially in shipboard applications.

In Tankers—By occupying less space, smaller compressors allow for more cargo room.  Because the compressors must be housed in special rooms to eliminate the danger of explosion (they are among the most costly partitions within a vessel) there are economies realized when these rooms create as small a footprint as possible.

In Pipelines—For similar reasons, the smaller the size and weight of a compressor’s motor, the better.

In the compressor used for either of these applications, the small, yet highly efficient, DDS high-speed electric motor provides a substantial advantage.  At about 1/5th the size of most compressor motors of equal power, it delivers high performance while taking up very little space.
