Direct Drive Systems (DDS) produces synchronous high-speed, high-power permanent magnet (PM) motors and generators that provide highly efficient and cost-effective compression, pumping, and generation solutions for the oil and gas and process industries and for a variety of other applications. DDS also produces magnetic bearings, which make oil-free turbomachinery applications possible.
On a per MW basis, DDS PM machines are significantly smaller, lighter, and more efficient than conventional motors and generators. They are also more affordable compared to other induction type high-speed machines, and because of their high-speed operation, they can be directly connected to other turbomachinery without using large and inefficient gearboxes. This makes DDS PM machines ideal for demanding applications, such as offshore platforms and subsea processing where small size and high reliability is at a premium, as well as other applications that require superior efficiency and low-operating costs. Because of these unique features, DDS high-speed, PM machines have enabled many new applications in the oil and gas industry, especially in subsea processing.
